This should be a good talk from someone who’s been in the industry for quite some time.
And by the way, this meeting marks our first 1/2 year (I just did the math!)
If you guys don’t know about hypem.com yet, you have got to check this site out. Basically it aggregates different blogs around the net (over a thousand at this point), and lets you go through and listen to what people are finding good. Lots of gems out there.
Hypem.com is essentially doing what radio is supposed to do now, give power to the person selecting the music and put the hardship on the DJ. Let them pour through 100’s of albums looking for good music and bring it to the surface. For the last 20 years radio has failed us with robot radio and set schedules of what music to play and when. The DJ’s haven’t had a lick of input as far as what gets played.
I think this is a fabulously awesome idea. These folks have done something similar to The Creative Space in downtown Bryan only using sewing/textiles as their medium. Here’s a little video from ThreadBanger (awesome!!!).
The idea behind Cafe Scientifique is that for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine people can meet to discuss the latest ideas of science and technology which are changing our lives. The aim of the
Cafe is to bring science into conversation and back into our culture.
The first Cafes Scientifiques were held in the UK in Leeds in 1998. From there, cafes sprang up in Newcastle, Nottingham and Oxford and then
gradually spread throughout the UK. Currently, more than 30 cafes meet regularly to hear scientists or writers on science talk about their work and discuss it with
diverse audiences.
Cafe Scientifique is a forum for debating science issues, not a shop window for science. We are committed to promoting public engagement with science and to making science accountable.
There are 6 speakers scheduled for the coming year, with the first on October 23 at 7:00pm at Revolution Cafe.
The first speaker is Prof. Mike Alvard from the Anthropology Dept. at Texas A&M, and his topic is “The Evolution of Cooperation.”
Just my latest jams.
I think I received 4 different text messages (thanks Erik, Meghan, Lauren, and Lucas) about the release of Radiohead’s newest album “In Rainbows”. It’s nearly impossible to download from their site right now, but hypem.com or favorite torrent site should help you find it. Overall I think it’s pretty good. I think they get better the longer they are around. Here’s a few tracks:
